Happy 2007 from the Hospital

Well it's the first day of the new year and Drew is still in the hospital. Heidi and I were optimistic that he would be coming home today but it just wasn't in the cards. In order for Drew to come home, the doctors would really like to see him consume about 20 ounces in a 24 hour period. At 5 PM we were on our way with 15 ounces when Drew got sick. At that point the doctors wanted to keep him. Drew has really been experiencing a lot of jaw pain this round, which is making eating difficult. Apparently this is one of the side effects of the vincristine drug. The doctors are able to give him the pain meds every 6 hours. Unfortunately you can really tell in Drew's facial expressions when he's getting ready for another dose of pain medication. That last 30 minutes is difficult to see as a parent, we feel pretty helpless. If the 2nd round is much like the 1st, this pain should subside within the next couple of days and we'll be back to being a family again. In the mean time the doctors are doing a great job keeping the meds coming. Heidi and I have even joked about trying to get some of them for ourselves!

This process hasn't been easy but we know that it's all worth it. The chemo appears to be doing it's magic on the cancer and we can only hope that these side effects are proof of that.

Drew, you have been such a trooper throughout this whole process, we are SO proud of you. We'll get you through this, it's only a matter of time. As Grandpa G says, "keep swinging!" Get a good nights rest, we love you buddy! Mom, Dad and Jack!
